If your pregnancy test was positive, it’s important to get an ultrasound regardless of the next steps you’re considering. Advancements in ultrasound technology through the years mean that ultrasounds can provide vital information about the location, timing, and health of the pregnancy.
We offer free ultrasounds at Women’s Pregnancy Solutions, so contact us today to schedule an appointment! Here’s what you can expect during an ultrasound:
What to expect during an ultrasound
When you arrive for your appointment at our mobile unit, we’ll have you fill out some basic paperwork, and then you’ll enter our unit. The interior of the unit was designed specifically with your comfort in mind.
You’re welcome to bring a friend, family member, or your partner with you to your appointment. It’s often helpful to have someone with you at appointments, and an ultrasound is no exception.
Once inside our spacious mobile unit, you’ll lie down on the examination table, rolling your pants down slightly and your shirt up enough to reveal your abdomen. If you think you’ll feel chilly, you can bring a light jacket.
Next, the ultrasound technician will spread gel over your stomach; this helps the ultrasound wand pick up the sound waves which create the image for you to see on the screen. After applying the gel, the tech will then move the wand (also called a transducer) over your abdomen to generate the image. You may feel slight pressure but not any pain.
After the images are picked up, you’ll have the option to view them. The tech will point out various features and answer any questions you may have about the ultrasound or pregnancy.
Why an ultrasound is important
Even if you’re considering an abortion, an ultrasound is very important. If the pregnancy is ectopic (located outside of the uterus), it’s not viable and can be life-threatening to you. Removing an ectopic pregnancy requires a different type of procedure than an abortion.
An ultrasound will also reveal how far along you are in your pregnancy, which also dictates the type of abortion you can have.
